Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. In 1906 she was asked to organize an infant school for 3 to 6 year olds. She called it the “Children’s House”. Many of these houses were opened worldwide.

Maria believed that all children had a hunger and energy to learn. The child is encouraged to perform the tasks him/herself. The child chooses his/her own work at his/her own pace. The materials are specially designed. The equipment is child sized, simple, attractive, self correcting and accessible. It teaches the child one concept at a time i.e. colour, shape.

Maria recognized that the first six years of life are the most important for the child and the rich stimulated environment is essential to the child’s needs.

The Montessori Method is an approach to education used predominantly in the pre-school sector. There are thousands of schools located throughout the world. The Montessori classroom is a very well planned and structured environment that will meet the needs of every child's individual educational and cultural needs. Children are free to develop and follow their own interests within this planned environment. This will help children as they all reach developmental milestones at different stages.

This will result in children developing in a more natural and motivated way. They develop good discipline and master basic skills, which in many cases is earlier than in traditional systems of education.

Montessori Teacher

The Montessori teacher is a facilitator. The teacher will observe the child in their own class to ascertain the developmental and individual needs of every child. The teacher will then prepare the environment to suit the various needs of every child.

As the child progresses, they can make free choices to interact and discover materials. The teacher will guide and facilitate this. There will be group time as well. Every morning we will begin with circle time where the teacher introduces new concepts and encourages the children to listen, ask questions and discover new ideas.

As a result, children who have engaged in Montessori education are highly motivated and learn to be independent, self-confident and self-disciplined. It makes education a source of enjoyment, something to be sought and enjoyed. Each and every child is given the opportunity to develop their own innate abilities to their full potential in an environment that is happy and open to learning.
